Renew before November 1, 2026 to skip this year's emissions test?
Yes, if your registration expires in November or December 2026. TxDMV says those renewals, if completed before November 1, 2026, don't require an emissions inspection or the $2.75 emissions fee. Only the $7.50 inspection replacement fee applies.
How the cut-off works
- Bexar County stations can't run emissions tests before Nov 1, 2026, so TxDMV made this rule for renewals that come due right after the start date (TxDMV Bulletin #003-26).
- Registration can be renewed up to 90 days before it expires (TxDMV, Bexar County).
- Renewal notices mailed in September 2026 for November 2026 expirations include information about the new requirement (TxDMV).
- This only postpones the test. You will need a passing test at the next year's renewal.
Ways to renew in Bexar County
- Online through TxDMV. Bexar County notes a $1.00 discount. TxDMV notes a two-business-day payment hold and up to three weeks for the sticker to arrive by mail.
- In person at a Bexar County Tax Office location, one of the county's auto title and registration service locations, or a participating H-E-B business center (with a renewal notice; registration expired no more than 30 days).
- By mail to the Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector. The county says to allow up to 15 days.

Not addressed in the sources: TxDMV's bulletin names November and December 2026 expirations specifically. It doesn't say what happens to a mailed renewal that is postmarked before Nov 1 but processed afterward, or to other edge cases. If you're cutting it close, renew online or in person before Nov 1, 2026, or call the Bexar County Tax Office (210-335-2251, per the county site).
If your registration expires in 2027 or later
Plan on a test. Get it done inside your 90-day renewal window, and leave time for repairs and the free 15-day retest if the first test fails.
