Do I need an emissions test in Bexar County?
Most likely yes, if your car runs on gasoline and is 2 to 24 years old. Starting November 1, 2026, gasoline-powered vehicles registered in Bexar County must pass an emissions (OBD) test before initial registration or renewal.
Not tested: electric-only vehicles, diesels, motorcycles and mopeds, gasoline vehicles 25+ years old, vehicles registered as Antique, and new vehicles until their second anniversary. See all exemptions.
You do not need a test until your registration is due for renewal.
Check your vehicle
The short version
- Wait for your renewal window. Registration can be renewed up to 90 days before it expires, and the emissions test must be done within that window.
- Fix the check-engine light first. A lit or "commanded on" check-engine light with a stored trouble code fails the test. What to do.
- Get tested at a DPS-certified station in Bexar County. Use the station locator.
- Renew online, by mail or in person once the test is on record. Estimate the cost.
Why is this happening?
Safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles ended statewide on January 1, 2025. Emissions testing is a separate state program. TCEQ lists Bexar County (the San Antonio area) as joining the existing 17 emissions counties on November 1, 2026, and Bexar County stations cannot run emissions tests before that date.
