Bexar County emissions testing FAQ

Short answers, each with its official source.

When does emissions testing start in Bexar County?

November 1, 2026. Bexar County stations cannot run emissions tests before that date. [TCEQ] [TxDMV Registration & Title Bulletin #003-26 (Sept 14, 2026)]

Which vehicles need an emissions test in San Antonio?

Gasoline-powered vehicles 2 through 24 years old registered in Bexar County must pass an emissions (OBDII) test before initial registration or renewal. [TCEQ] [TxDMV Registration & Title Bulletin #003-26 (Sept 14, 2026)]

How much does the Bexar County emissions test cost?

Up to $18.50 at the inspection station, plus $2.75 collected by the state when you register. A typical car under 6,000 lb comes to about $88.25 at registration plus up to $18.50 at the station. [TxDMV Registration & Title Bulletin #003-26 (Sept 14, 2026)] [Texas DPS news release, Jan 5, 2026] [Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector]

Are electric cars exempt from Bexar County emissions testing?

Yes. Electric-only vehicles are exempt. Fully electric vehicles of 10,000 lb or less pay a separate $200 annual EV fee at registration. [TCEQ] [Texas DPS news release, Jan 5, 2026] [TxDMV]

Do diesel trucks need an emissions test in Bexar County?

No. TCEQ lists diesel vehicles, along with electric vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds, as not required to be inspected for emissions. [TCEQ]

Do hybrids need an emissions test?

No official page we found names hybrids directly. Because hybrids run on gasoline, and DPS's exemption names only electric-only vehicles, hybrid owners should expect a test. Confirm with a station if you are unsure. [Texas DPS] [Texas DPS news release, Jan 5, 2026]

My car is 25 years old or older. Do I need a test?

No. The program covers gasoline vehicles 2 through 24 years old. Vehicles registered as Antique are also exempt. If you are right at the age cut-off, follow your renewal notice. [TCEQ] [Texas DPS]

Do I need a test before my current registration expires?

No. DPS says drivers with unexpired registration don't need a passing emissions test until it is time to renew. The test must fall within the 90-day renewal window. [Texas DPS news release, Jan 5, 2026] [TxDMV Registration & Title Bulletin #003-26 (Sept 14, 2026)]

Can I renew before November 1, 2026 to skip the test?

If your registration expires in November or December 2026 and you renew before November 1, 2026, TxDMV says no emissions inspection or $2.75 fee is required for that renewal. You will need a test at the next renewal. [TxDMV Registration & Title Bulletin #003-26 (Sept 14, 2026)]

Will a check-engine light fail the emissions test?

Yes. If the computer is commanding the check-engine light on with a stored trouble code, the vehicle fails. A light that doesn't work also fails. Clearing codes right before the test can also cause a failure, because readiness monitors reset to Not Ready. [Texas DPS] [Texas DPS]

What happens if my car fails?

Repair it and return to the same station within 15 days for a free retest. If it still fails, DPS offers limited waivers and time extensions (individual vehicle, low income, low mileage, parts availability). [Texas DPS] [Texas DPS]

Where can I get tested?

At a DPS-certified emissions station in Bexar County. Use the DPS Vehicle Inspection Station Locator. [Texas DPS]

Is this site run by the state or the county?

No. It is an independent guide, not affiliated with TxDMV, DPS, TCEQ or Bexar County. Every answer links to the official source.
